SLUMDOGS!

When I finished watching slumdog millionaire, for one second I thought that the director had just romanticised the slums here in India which actually reinforces a negative feeling about our country. Then, I convinced myself that it is real what has been shown and ya, reality hurts. Later, I was shocked to see a case filed against these film-makers for the same issue that they abused slum dwellers here in the name of entertainment. Strictly, the film is very thought-provoking.

Few real-life incidents that made me feel so:-

Three of my friends and I boarded a general class ladies compartment in a local train in Mumbai. We could hardly breathe and were completely unable to move our hands. Believe it or not, Lydia had no place to hold her bag and she had to carry it on her head all throughout the journey. It is a railway rule that those who are getting off the train have to use the left door and those who are boarding it have to use the right. No body was in a mood to listen. Those who had to get down , had to brutally push those ones standing in front. And the pity is the train wouldn’t stay for long in a local station and by the time a person completely places his second foot on ground, it gains speed. We literally saw hell there and were very happy that we got down in the right station without any hurts. I was moved to note that my dad and some of my uncles go to their offices the same way everyday. There’s no other option for them!

Imagine you’re on a journey to a far-off place in a second class compartment. You’re sure to have your tickets reserved and you’re well seated. How frustrating it would be when someone without reservation approaches asking for a share in place and that too for the rest of the whole journey! How irritating it would be when 5 of you sit together in a two seater! Homecoming from Chennai was awful. A family of about 9 members and 2 of my cousins has to share a 6 seater. We were really annoyed to note that they had not reserved their tickets before and they had to urgently come to hyd. The unreserved compartment was already over-flooded and so they had to trouble other passengers.

A very heartrending incident for which I was an eye-witness:-

My school in Nzb was next to a maternity hospital. It was evening and I was waiting for my dad to pick me up. A rickshaw puller had come to see his wife after her delivery for the first time. When he saw that she delivered a girl, that savage killed the child on spot.[ Probably he was drunk!] Much havoc was created then and I dont know the whereabouts of anybody concerned. That incident lingered in my mind for several months and even now, when I come to know that someone delivered a girl-child, i am reminded of this.

I dont mean that every slum-dweller is a nuisance to country. I know that they live in dire poverty and troubles and I also sympathize for them.I seriously wish that a kind of awareness is created and that this awareness brings blossom in their lives as well as helps India to move a step forward. Because for a better India, Every slumdog needn’t become a millionaire. It is worthy enough that every slumdog doesn’t continue to remain one.

PS: I know this post talks too much of a problem and very less of a solution. Will certainly come up with part-2 of this that talks more of a solution.

2. I have NO intentions of getting into politics. I write this because I have a blog space and will continue till this bores me.

3. Very happy to note that Rahman is the first indian to win a golden globe.

EACH IS GREAT IN ITS OWN PLACE!

I am writing this just to pen down a few discussions I had with my friends last week. An honest opinion is always welcome!

Gender:-

I dont claim women are greater than men. Nor do I support the viceversa(I am a feminist).
The whole thing began when one of my old classmates talked something offensive in an abusive language to
my friend(a girl). When asked why he had to say it, he merely replied that that’s the way he talks to any other guy  and he just said it for the heck of it. When told that its not the way to talk to a girl, he retorted back saying why doesn’t equality of men and women hold there. True.. man and woman are not equal. It is just that each is great in his/her own place. A comparison isn’t valid at all.  Each deserves respect and and it has to be mutual.

Language:-

I seriously despise people who have no respect towards their language. It is not a compulsion that one has to write/read one’s mother tongue. Not many are blessed to do this. But certainly that does not mean they dont care for  it. Having tolerance towards other languages is a courtesy. No language is better than the other. Each is great in its own place. When an outsider comes to seek help(whatever form it may be in- job, education, marriage), he/she should be treated with respect and amity. Forming seperate groups based on language and contemning the other group is very ill.

Education:-

Damn! I had to listen to hear something sick about education too. Subjects on arts and culture are not very popular now. One reason I see is:-  Technology is developing at a much faster pace and employment opportunities are high and more profitable. But that does not mean every *tech-person* is a traitor and has no regard for arts/culture/country. I personally know(or heard of) few people who have graduated from IITs as qualified engineers and are IAS/IFS officers now. I know mr.X who has pursued MA(telugu) after graduating as an engineer from BEC. It is true that many of the engineers continue to be on the tech side, but there are considerable people who try to do something off the track. None of the people from either groups has a disregard for the country. As said earlier, each is great in its own place.

Arts:-

There’s NO comparision between music and dance. Both are eternal and fabulous. All that I have to say here is, Each is great in its own place.

As a review:- I have seen fashion movie of late. I was completely reluctant to watch it except for the director and songs. Having read that it is a real story, I have seen it and am delighted that I saw it. The dark side of the fashion world was shown very well and it took me half a day to come out of a feeling that is inexplicable. I also wonder if there is any model who is pure and chaste. As a matter of fact, those films that are based on real life incidents are such a delight to watch. Mahanadi is also one such movie that almost got me out of my senses. TZP is worth-mentioning. Wish it wins the oscar award.

Alas!

My first telugu poem!

Reminiscing back, i wrote this poem when I was in my grade 9. Pardon me for any grammetical mistakes.

Are we civilized? -II

PS: Please read “Are we civilized-I” before you read this.

Those incidents are just samples.

It is like a slap on our culture to hear such things happen around us.

The following are the measures I could think of to prevent abuse of small children and teenage girls. Please add some if you can think of any.

1. School authorities are responsible to check the profile of the people whom they are employing as caretakers and drivers.

Those having criminal background or some police cases in their name should not be considered.

2. A teacher or any other responsible person should escort all the children till the last one is dropped off at his/her home.

3. The entire bus journey should be tracked using some electronic media.

4. Those crooks who are accused of such crimes should be punished severely without mercy. Something out of Sidney Sheldon’s write-ups is my choice J That would create a sense of terror in any body else who thinks of committing such nasty things.

5. Crime branch from police should keep patrolling in every part of the city.

6. Most important of all, Parents should give their wards necessary precautions and educate them how to raise an alarm when they are in trouble.

7. Public should feel responsible to stop such obscene acts happening in their neighborhood or bring to the notice of a cop nearby.

8. Any media – movies or television or videos or books which show pornographic content should be banned completely. This is where youth should take up the responsibility. Only because people still encourage such media, they are being released into public either legally or illegally. Indirectly, people who use this media are also causes for such terrible acts and prostitution!

9. To stop incest, family members should keep an eye on the other members. If they find anything fishy , the concerned should be given immediate counseling. Many people do not come forward with such problems fearing a bad reputation. Such inhibitions should be shed off.

10. Hearing of such cases should be done very quick and the punishment should be apt and severe irrespective of criminal’s caste, creed, gender and background. I always wondered, what is wrong in punishing the accused if he has got some mental problem when he has committed serious crimes? We are sure we don’t want them to happen again! So get rid of the guilty.

11. For God’s sake, ban those TV channels which show more problem than solution. What is the point in watching “HOW” a crime has been committed? We supposed to learn how not to get into such circumstances, aren’t we? Then please educate people how to save themselves from the clutches of sexual abuse. Don’t show how to do sexually assault someone.

12. An interesting point:-

Wear decent and adequate clothing. If you don’t stand for this point, just go to Hyderabad central or any other such place which is said to be visited by so called “POSH” people. Some scholar said, a girl’s beauty is more heart-felt than seen. Stay beautiful if you are, don’t be sensual or revealing.

13. Boozing and Doping:- The ill-effects they cause are pretty-known to everybody. Needless to mention, another monster has crept in India recently- “Living together”. If making love before marriage is acceptable , what is the difference between mankind and animals? Where does the word “civilized human being” stand at this point?

14. Public should treat such criminals with contempt. Humiliation / disgrace wherever he goes should make him realize the severity of the crime.

More points will be added later. A honest opinion either for/against my arguments is always welcome.

Are “we” civilized? -I

Scene 1:-

A small local street in Hyderabad.

A 6-year old girl was molested by a bus driver and a cleaner. Note the age of the girl, She might not have even heard the name of this bloody act ,forget its meaning.

Scene 2:-

A local street in Noida.

Bones and remains of small children (about 12 in number) sexually abused by a native businessman earthed in his house. Note the number of kids.

Scene 3:-

A local village in medchal. (I am not very sure about this place, but it is in Telengana for sure.)

A 8-year girl repeatedly molested by a male due to which her uterus has been removed. Note the age of girl and also the consequences she is in at this tender age.

Scene 4:-

A personal Q and A column in a woman magazine (Women’s era to be precise.)

A boy has written a question to the psychologist saying he is sexually attracted to his mother(??????????)

Scene 5:-

A local town in Krishna dist.

A girl Ayesha Meera has been brutally raped , killed and the corpse was lying in an inexpressible state.

Scene 6:-

I have heard of this. Don’t know the whereabouts of this incident. A similar incident took place in US recently.

A girl was sexually abused by her own father.

Scene 7:-

Most of us know this. Sri Lakshmi was savagely murdered by her classmate, who is now going to be released( or might have been released already) after a nominal conviction of some years.

Scene 8:-

Thanks to woman’s era personal column.

A mother sent a post that read — ” I found my children going to bed together.”

Scene 9:-

A local hospital in Delhi.

A nurse who was on night duty was brutally raped by a compounder after which she was found in a bathroom with a dangling eye!

Scene 10:-

Another town in India.

A father kills his own daughter who happened to know about his illicit relationship with another woman.

There is another argument too- He has an alibi saying he killed her because she was sexually close to their servant.

*****************************************************************************************************************

Does this sound like some crime reporter on a local news channel? Pardon me if it does. I wanted to start off with a list of incidents and details I was aware of them. Though it seems like only the criminal directly involved is responsible for such bloody events, there are many things(?) that are indirectly more relevant causes for these to happen.

  1. Negligence of school authorities
  2. Nonperformance of crime control officers
  3. Carelessness of Government
  4. Negligence of parents
  5. Ignorance of victims
  6. Fear in the affected
  7. Lack of responsibility in public
  8. Lack of fear of law in crooks
  9. Inability of the affected to fight for justice
  10. Last but first, media which explicitly shows incest and lust.

I can go on with number of such reasons.

But, now I ask myself.. “Am I living in a civilized society? “

“Is there something on this earth that is impeccable and is not responsible for these to happen?”. If you happen to find one such a thing, please tell me.

PS:- Coming next is a post that contains the ideas and thoughts I could think of to prevent such things in coming future.
